The Slowest Month for NHL Fans
Ah, August. That time of year when summer starts waning, kids begin to dread the start of the coming school year, and this year the Olympics are in full swing. It’s the time of year that’s the worst for NHL fans.
August usually is the most quiet month. The only major ‘deadline’ was arbitration decisions had to be rendered by August 6th. Other than that, it’s just been minor player signings here and there, and another former player signing in Europe (defenceman Sean Hill signed to play in Switzerland).
It’s been so quiet, ESPN and TSN both revisted the Wayne Gretzky trade from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings of 20 years ago. The New York Islanders are trying to decide on a new coach, and the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Bryan McCabe is contemplating waiving his no-trade clause. Truly earth-shattering stuff.
