Dean Lombardi Speaks Out About Heatley

During the final day of the Los Angeles Kings’ three-day fan fest, the Los Angeles Times asked GM Dean Lombardi about the club’s interest in disgruntled Ottawa Senators forward Dany Heatley.

“Do I want to bring in a Dany Heatley with all that baggage?” Lombardi told the Times. ‘’It might work, but I don’t think we’re in a position where we can afford that. … Maybe a change of environment and he grows up but my point is; do we need to take that risk right now? It scares me.”

It’s refreshing to see a GM speak his mind, even if it’s blasting another team’s player. A lot of people probably have the same opinion of Heatley: that he needs to grow up and handle things like an adult. If he wanted a trade, it might have been better to keep his desire behind closed door rather than announce his feelings to the world.

Lombardi has done a great job of rebuilding the Kings’ entire system, and even while with San Jose, he would never consider a deal that would be detrimental to the club’s cohesiveness. The Kings are a team to watch this season, and bringing in Heatley might be more of a distraction than help.
